About Geelong

Victoria is fast becoming the go-to place to live and visit in Australia. Its capital city, Melbourne (only 1 hour away from Geelong), has been widely regarded as “The World’s most Liveable City” for over a decade. Renowned for its Coffee Culture, Food, Sport, Arts, World-Class Performance attractions and Live Music scene, it is a friendly, multicultural city which provides a gateway to some of the most beautiful eco-tourist attractions in Australia. From The Wine region of the Yarra Valley, The Dandenong’s, Phillip Island Penguin Colony, The Grampians and the home of surfing in Australia – Torquay (only 20 minutes from Geelong).

Melbourne and Geelong are two of the fastest growing regions in Australia with plenty of opportunities in Building and Construction, Sporting and Lifestyle, Project Management, Business Management, Finance, Regenerative Agricultural practices and Renewables. Geelong is well serviced by trains to Melbourne and Adelaide and both Nationally and Internationally by the Avalon Airport on the Melbourne side of Corio Bay.

Geelong is a “Port City”, located on Corio Bay and the Barwon River, in the state of Victoria, Australia. Geelong is 75 kilometres south-west of the state capital, Melbourne. Situated at the Western top of Port Phillip Bay on Eastern Beach, 30 kilometres from the Bass Straight, separated by the Bellarine Peninsula with its world class wines, spectacular coastline and surfing. It is the second largest Victorian city, with a thriving urban population of 260,000. It is well serviced by Hospitals, Universities, TAFE, Colleges and Schools. The City hosts great shopping with Westfield Shopping Centre as the centrepiece with extensive retail, Pubs, Shops, Restaurants and Cafes to suit every need. Geelong is the Home of AFL powerhouse, the Geelong Cats, who are based at their recently upgraded Home Grond – Kardinia Park, right in the centre of town.

Geelong was named in 1827, with the name derived from the local Wathaurong Aboriginal name for the region, Djillong, thought to mean “land” or “cliffs” or “tongue of land or peninsula”, with the township surveyed in 1838 only 3 weeks after Melbourne. In 1912 the first automatic telephone exchange in the Southern Hemisphere opened in Geelong, the same year that it saw electric trams begin operation. The City of Geelong has a rich history from being the central Port for the Gold Rush and Wool exports from the 1850’s, establishing the first Ford Motor Company Plant established outside the USA in 1925, to becoming a thriving metropolis – as Melbourne’s sister city.

GEM College acknowledges the Wadawurrung people as the custodians of the Adelaide region and that their cultural and heritage beliefs are still as important to the living Wadawurrung people today. Wathaurong, also called the “Wadda Wurrung”, are the Aboriginal Australian people who are the traditional custodians of the land located around Geelong and the Bellarine Peninsula. They are part of the Kulin alliance. The Wathaurong language was spoken by 25 clans south of the Werribee River and they were sometimes referred to by Europeans as the Barrabool people. The area they inhabit has been occupied for at least 25,000 years, with 140 archaeological sites having been found in the region, indicating significant activity over that period.

“Djilang was the traditional Wadawurrung name for Geelong. Djilang meaning a “Tongue of Land”. As Bunjil, our Karringalibil Murrup (Creator Spirit) flew over this country, his eyes looking down on country, he saw the water coming into the bay and the tongue of land – Djilang. Djilang was a rich cultural landscape for the Wadawurrung, a place of plenty. From our wetlands, coastal country, rivers and inland country, the resources were used by our people to live a rich and sustainable life and as valuable trading materials. Significant cultural landscapes feature surrounding Djilang include: Wurdi Youang, meaning Big Hill and now known as the You Yangs, Corio Bay, meaning Sandy place, Lake Connewarre coming from the Wadawurrung word Kunawarra – the Black swan, and the Moorabool and Barwon Rivers, a connected system between the mountains and the sea. These significant cultural land features show how our land still speaks to us of our language, Wadawurrung Ancestors, and their connection to this Country.” (Excerpt from the Wadawurrung Aboriginal history, Reconciliation Action Plan)

Geelong, like Melbourne’s weather is famous for having “four seasons in one hour”. Geelong has stable weather, yet still offers four distinct seasons. It has a temperate oceanic climate with dominant westerly winds, variable clouds, moderate precipitation, warm summers, and mild to cool winters. February is the hottest month and July is the coldest and with an average annual rainfall of around 520 mm making Geelong the driest sizeable city in Australia.
